Author(s): Sivarasakumar Rushanthan, Saranya Rushanthan

Abstract:

This research study aims to investigate the impact of diverse literary texts on students' literature knowledge and cultural understanding through a comparative analysis. Recognizing the importance of literature education in fostering critical thinking, empathy, and cultural awareness, this research seeks to explore how exposure to a range of literary works from different genres, authors, and cultural backgrounds can enhance students' understanding and appreciation of literature while promoting cultural understanding. The study employs a comparative methodology, comparing the effects of traditional canon-based literature curricula with curricula that include a more diverse range of literary texts. Quantitative and qualitative data are collected through pre- and post-tests, surveys, and interviews from a sample of students across different educational levels. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the impact of diverse literary texts on students' literature knowledge and cultural understanding, informing educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers on effective strategies for incorporating diverse literary texts into the curriculum. Ultimately, this research contributes to the broader understanding of literature education and its role in nurturing well-rounded and culturally aware students.
