Abstract:

This article examines the historical development of mangrove ecotourism in Probolinggo, with a focus on the case of Bee Jay Bakau Resort (BJBR). The study addresses three main questions: (1) the reasons behind the establishment of BJBR Mayangan Probolinggo, (2) the process of its development between 2012 and 2017, and (3) the impacts of BJBR ecotourism on the local community and the surrounding environment. Employing a historical method—comprising heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography—this research is analyzed within the framework of ecotourism theory. The findings reveal that the establishment of BJBR was motivated not only by economic considerations but also by environmental conservation, particularly the preservation of mangrove forests, as well as its role as an educational site for visitors. Construction began in 2012 and was inaugurated in 2013 as a collaborative effort between entrepreneurs and local government. Promotional strategies included billboard and banner advertising, as well as distributing brochures. The development of BJBR generated positive economic outcomes through job creation and improved community welfare. Socially, it fostered greater public awareness and responsibility in preserving the mangrove ecosystem, thereby reinforcing the dual function of BJBR as both a tourism destination and a conservation initiative.
