An Overview of Delinquent Environment and Students’ Academic Performance in Nigerian Secondary Schools

Abstract:
It is sad, yet true that Nigeria secondary school that ought to be the cradles of academic excellence that tier of education, have observably become the believers of crimes and criminalities where graduates with moral burdens are churned out yearly. Its sequel to this worrisome situation that this paper attempted an elucidation of the concept of delinquency, diligent environment and the predisposal factors responsible for delinquent school environment viewed juxtapose with students’ academic performance. The paper highlight of roles of family, peer influence, school environment itself, absence of school guidance counselors and the bid to meet the needs of the students in creating diligent school environment. The paper, however, recommend that parents and guidance should be able monitor the activities of their children and the peer group they keep, the school heads must make the school attractive and must not display I-don’t- care attitude in dealing with the students, among others.
