Author(s): Nguyen Hoang Tien, Dang Thi Phuong Chi

Abstract:

Increasing urbanization in Vietnam, located in a tropical climate zone, poses challenges to architecture in terms of thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and urban environmental quality. This article examines the key role of trees in residential architectural design in this specific climate. It presents the benefits of trees, such as reducing the urban heat island effect, naturally cooling buildings and outdoor spaces, improving air quality, protecting against heavy rain and strong winds, and positively impacting residents' mental health. The article details the use of native tree species in Vietnamese architectural contexts, drawing on existing case studies and traditional design practices. It highlights the need to integrate greenery into the urban and architectural planning process, highlighting the potential of trees to create more sustainable, comfortable, and aesthetic living environments. The article provides recommendations for design strategies and policies that support sustainable solutions in the context of dynamic development of Vietnamese cities.
