Technological Capability and Operational Responsiveness in Telecom Firms
Author(s): Mohammad Abdullah Al-Ashwal
Abstract:
Telecommunications firms must convert technology investments into adaptive capabilities and timely customer-facing operations. Drawing on dynamic capabilities theory, this study examines whether technological capability (TC) is associated with operational response speed (ORS) directly and through dynamic capabilities (DC) and service innovation capability (SIC). A cross-sectional, paper-based survey was administered to managerial employees in four telecommunications companies in Sana’a, Yemen. The analytical file contained 256 complete responses. The model was estimated in SmartPLS 4.1.1.8 using formative composites, a two-tailed bootstrap with 5,000 subsamples, and out-of-sample prediction procedures. All six hypothesized direct paths were positive and statistically significant: TC→DC (β=.747), TC→SIC (β=.496), DC→SIC (β=.352), DC→ORS (β=.314), SIC→ORS (β=.402), and TC→ORS (β=.199). The three focal indirect routes to ORS were also significant: TC→DC→ORS (β=.235), TC→SIC→ORS (β=.200), and TC→DC→SIC→ORS (β=.106), while the direct TC→ORS association remained significant. The model explained 55.9% of the variance in DC, 63.1% in SIC, and 69.7% in ORS. Predictive comparisons showed improvement over an indicator-average benchmark; superiority over a linear benchmark was significant at the latent-variable level overall and for DC and SIC, but not for ORS. The findings are consistent with complementary capability pathways linking technology to operational response. The cross-sectional, single-informant design limits causal interpretation and the generalizability of the findings.
