Abstract:
Coffee is simultaneously an agricultural commodity, a globally traded beverage, and an increasingly differentiated consumer product. This review evaluates the development potential of the global coffee market through an integrated analysis of production, consumption, trade, price formation, product differentiation, sustainability requirements, climate risk, processing, traceability, and circular-economy opportunities, with particular attention to Vietnam. Recent official statistics indicate continued expansion in global coffee production and consumption, while supply constraints, climate variability, logistics, regulatory requirements, and price volatility are reshaping competitive conditions. USDA projected world coffee production at 174.86 million 60-kg bags in marketing year 2024/25 and global consumption at 168.1 million bags, indicating a structurally large and expanding market. Vietnam has experienced a major increase in export value: coffee exports reached approximately USD 5.62 billion in calendar year 2024 and a record USD 8.4 billion in the 2024/25 crop year. The evidence indicates that future market development is unlikely to depend solely on increasing green-bean volume. Instead, competitive advantage will increasingly arise from quality differentiation, origin identity, traceability, climate-resilient production, advanced processing, digital supply-chain management, and higher-value consumer products. The review proposes a market-development framework linking production resilience, quality upgrading, digital traceability, value-added processing, and circular bioeconomy models. For Vietnam, the strategic implication is a transition from a volume-oriented export model toward a diversified value-chain model combining high-quality Robusta, specialty Arabica, origin-based products, roasted and soluble coffee, ready-to-drink products, and verified sustainable coffee. The article concludes that the long-term potential of the coffee market is substantial, but realization of this potential will depend on coordinated investments in farm renewal, post-harvest quality, data infrastructure, producer organization, market intelligence, and compliance capacity.
