Entrepreneurial Orientation, Digital Capability, and Sustainable Competitive Advantage in Culinary MSMEs: A Conceptual Systematic Review

Author(s): Heri Supriyadi, Eka Sudarmaji

Abstract:

This conceptual systematic review examines the theoretical and empirical connections among entrepreneurial orientation (EO), digital capability, innovation capability, and sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) in culinary micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with particular attention to the moderating role of market turbulence and the enabling conditions of institutional support. Following the six-stage framework proposed by Schreiber and Cramer (2024) [28], the review first clarifies how these constructs are defined across disciplines before examining how they work together. The review draws on 45 peer-reviewed studies and gray literature sources published between 1990 and 2026, retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, SINTA, and Google Scholar through a PRISMA 2020 protocol screening an initial pool of 112 records. A deductive and inductive coding procedure produced five perspectives and ten categories, with Krippendorff's alpha ranging from 0.69 to 0.85, satisfying all six CSR quality criteria. Findings reveal that EO and digital capability individually and jointly predict competitive advantage only when they are channeled through active innovation capability. Three dominant thematic clusters organize the field: strategic orientation and agility-driven responsiveness; digital transformation pathways and dynamic resource orchestration; and innovation capability combined with contextually grounded sustainable competitiveness. The review identifies a persistent gap in integrated moderated mediation models that simultaneously capture EO, digital capability, innovation capability, and market turbulence within culinary MSMEs in secondary Indonesian cities. It also brings to the surface the underexplored role of halal certification and regional cultural knowledge as VRIO-qualifying resources. The review contributes a consolidated evidence map, a validated conceptual classification, and a testable structural model to guide future empirical studies, while offering practical direction for policymakers who want to shift MSME digital programs from basic tool adoption toward genuine capability building.
