Contesting the Shift in Historical Epistemic Authority in the Algorithmic Age

Author(s): Ucheoma C Osuji

Abstract:

For most of recorded history, we have trusted a small, identifiable circle of people to tell us what happened: archivists, historians, editors, librarians. We could ask who they were, how they worked, and why they deserved our trust. That circle is quietly being replaced. Today, a search engine's ranking, a recommendation algorithm, or a generative AI system increasingly decides which version of the past reaches us first and most of us never see, let alone question, the reasoning behind that choice. This study asks a simple but urgent question: when a machine becomes our most frequent source of historical knowledge, what happens to the trust historical authority was built on? Philosophers have long argued that trusting another person's judgment is only rational when we have grounds to believe they are conscientious and reliable. Algorithmic systems complicate that bargain. They are fast, confident, and everywhere — but often opaque even to the people who built them, and shaped by commercial incentives that have nothing to do with truth. The result is not necessarily worse information, but a different, less visible chain of custody between the past and the present showing one the public has had little say in designing. This research combines philosophy of history, epistemology, and science and technology studies to map how historical authority is being renegotiated in real time, and to propose concrete standards of transparency, accountability, and public participation, that algorithmic systems handling historical knowledge should be expected to meet. The stakes are not abstract. A society that no longer knows who or what is telling it about its own past is a society that has lost a basic form of self-understanding. This project aims to help recover it.
