Author(s): Fatima Louise De Los Santos, Carmina P Norona
Abstract:
This study examines the proficiency of sign language among students with hearing impairments at the Monterey County Office of Education. Acknowledging the vital role of effective communication in the educational and social development of these students, the research aims to assess their sign language skills through a comprehensive evaluation. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study integrates quantitative assessments of sign language competency with qualitative interviews of educators and students to gather nuanced insights into the factors that influence proficiency. The findings reveal a diverse range of proficiency levels among students, significantly affected by variable such as age, educational background, and access to resources. Notably, students with early and consistent exposure to sign language exhibit enhanced communication skills. Additionally, the research underscores the critical role of trained educators and supportive learning environments in fostering sign language proficiency.
