Effect of Computer Assisted Instruction on Students’ Academic Achievement in Biology in Nsukka LGA, Enugu

Abstract:

The study investigated the effect of computer assisted instruction on students' academic achievement in biology in Nsukka LGA, Enugu. The population of the study comprises of 2,637 SS1 students, in 31 Public Secondary schools in Nsukka L.G.A. This study employed a non-equivalent quasi-experimental, research design. One hundred and twenty students from two schools (male and female) sampled, were used as sample for the study. Intact classes were assigned by balloting to either experimental or control group. All the groups were pre and post tested. Biology Achievement Test (BAT) was used as the instrument for data collection. The reliability of the instrument was determined using. Kuder Richardson formula (K.R-20) 0.79. The study was guided by two research questions and three null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that students who were exposed to CAI method achieved higher than their counterparts and there is no significant difference between gender and the students' achievement in Biology. The study recommended among other things that Government should provide CAI facilities in public secondary schools so as to provide access to CAI devices to both teachers and learners to ensure proper implementation of computer assisted instructions. Teachers should embrace the innovative instructional materials such as the use of drills & practice, games and other computer software which will help to promote the students’ academic achievement in Biology.
