The Significance of Head Size in Maintaining Postural Equilibrium in the Donkey

Abstract:

The postural equilibrium of the donkey (Equus asinus) results from the complex interplay among body mass, body conformation, the spatial arrangement of individual body segments, skeletal configuration, muscular activity, and limb positioning relative to the supporting surface.

The fundamental distinction between statics and biostatics lies in the fact that statics examines and defines the principles governing stationary abiotic masses or structures, whose constituent elements do not actively participate in movement. By contrast, in the biostatic model of a living organism, the anatomical structures that provide static support also actively contribute to locomotion and, consequently, to biodynamics.

The head is not merely the terminal region of the body containing the sensory organs and the initial portions of the digestive and respiratory systems; it also represents a biomechanically significant mass. Its position relative to the trunk may alter both body-mass distribution and the location of the whole-body centre of mass.

However, the contribution of the head to postural balance in the donkey cannot be assessed using a single morphometric measurement. Head length alone provides no information about either the location of the head segment’s centre of mass or that of the animal’s whole-body centre of mass. Such an analysis requires, at a minimum, knowledge of the mass of the relevant body segment and the position of its centre of mass. A more precise model would additionally require data on the mass and centre-of-mass location of all major body segments.
