Assessing the Effects of Urbanization on Household Living Standards: A Case Study of Kabwata Constituency, Lusaka

This study explores the relationship between urbanization and income inequality in Kabwata Constituency, Lusaka. Urbanization, driven by rural-to-urban migration, has been a key trend, particularly in developing countries. While urbanization can bring economic growth and improved living standards, it also exacerbates income inequality, the uneven distribution of income within a population, with significant social, economic, and political consequences. The research examines how urbanization affects income distribution in Kabwata, analyzing various socio-economic factors and policy frameworks. A mixed-method approach is used, combining quantitative data from surveys and qualitative insights from interviews and focus groups, with a diverse sample of Kabwata residents. Statistical and thematic analyses are employed to interpret the data. The findings show that urbanization has spurred economic growth in Kabwata but has also increased income inequality. Contributing factors include unequal access to education, employment, housing, and essential services. The study also evaluates government policies and community initiatives aimed at reducing inequality, highlighting areas that need improvement. The research underscores the importance of inclusive urban development policies to tackle the root causes of income inequality. Recommendations include expanding education and employment opportunities, improving affordable housing access, and strengthening community support systems. Addressing these challenges can help policymakers manage urbanization's impact and promote equitable economic growth.
