Abstract:
Archival libraries play an important role in preserving the documentary, cultural, historical, and intellectual heritage of societies. India possesses a rich and diverse archival heritage comprising rare books, manuscripts, inscriptions, artefacts, photographs, and other historical records. Kerala, with its distinctive cultural and historical traditions, has a significant network of archival libraries and heritage institutions that preserve valuable materials related to the region's history and development. This study provides an overview and critical analysis of selected archival libraries and heritage institutions in Kerala, with particular emphasis on preservation and conservation practices, digitization, accessibility, institutional development, and community participation. The study draws upon visits to selected institutions, interactions with library and archival personnel, documentary sources, institutional websites, research literature, and other secondary sources. It examines the nature of archival collections, preservation initiatives, adoption of modern technologies, public and research services, and the role of local communities in supporting archival heritage. The study also identifies major challenges related to professional staffing, financial resources, conservation infrastructure, technological adoption, digital preservation, public awareness, and community engagement. The paper argues that the sustainable preservation of Kerala’s archival heritage requires an integrated approach that encompasses institutional support, professional expertise, systematic digitization, improved public access, heritage education, and meaningful community participation. The study concludes by suggesting measures to strengthen archival preservation and ensure that Kerala’s documentary heritage remains accessible to future generations.
