Impact of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Related Technologies on the Indian Printing Industry
Author(s): Dr. N Krishnaswamy
Abstract:
The Indian printing industry is a vital macroeconomic pillar facing unprecedented modern challenges, including tightening profit margins, localised supply chain volatility, and intensifying global sustainability standards. In response, the integration of Industry 4.0 digital levers—specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and real-time data analysis—is converting traditional, labour-intensive legacy workflows into smart, self-optimizing manufacturing systems. To investigate these technological transformations within a condensed timeframe, this study employs a reliable multi-case study and secondary data analysis methodology. By triangulating audited financial filings from Indian printing majors alongside global technology vendor deployment case logs. The empirical findings reveal that AI/ML implementation significantly improves operational performance across three primary areas: reducing substrate trim waste by up to 8% via automated genetic pre-press imposition algorithms, eliminating macro-defects during high-speed production through convolutional pixel-matching machine vision arrays, and avoiding catastrophic mechanical downtime using IoT-driven Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) predictive maintenance profiles.
