Dependance Spatiale et Convergence Regionale au Maroc: Une Analyse Exploratoire des Donnees Spatiales (AEDS)

Abstract:
This article analyses the dynamics of regional disparities in Morocco over the period 2014-2023, the first complete cycle of advanced regionalisation. Reducing these disparities is a central objective of this reform and of the New Development Model, yet gaps between regions persist despite sustained national growth. The article aims to determine whether regions are converging or polarising, and to what extent the spatial dimension shapes this dynamic. To this end, it draws on exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and β-convergence models on panel data, with GDP per capita as the variable of interest. The results reveal a positive and increasing spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I rising from 0.38 to 0.62), σ-divergence, and the absence of absolute β-convergence. A significant conditional β-convergence emerges once the structural characteristics of regions are controlled for. Regional disparities in Morocco thus reflect a persistent structural polarisation rather than a transitory lag.
