Textbooks on International Nursing and Expectations for International Nursing Education in Japanese Nursing Universities
Author(s): Keiko Hattori
Abstract:
This study compares two major International Nursing textbooks widely used in Japanese nursing universities to clarify their educational aims and the competencies required of international nurses. The Medical Friend textbook emphasizes global nursing ethics, international cooperation, multicultural coexistence, and nursing care for foreign residents in Japan. The Nankodo textbook highlights cultural understanding, global health issues, international cooperation, and practical guidance for working abroad, offering many real-world examples. The author, who teaches International Nursing, does not rely on a single textbook but integrates multiple sources and experiential learning. The course focuses on intercultural communication, self-awareness, and interaction with foreign residents, including exchanges with international students using Easy Japanese. These experiences help students recognize unconscious biases and develop practical communication skills. As the number of foreign residents in Japan increases, the need for nursing care that considers cultural backgrounds is growing. The author argues that experiential learning and potential future clinical training in International Nursing will be essential. Ultimately, textbooks should support—but not replace—real-world practice in multicultural nursing environments.
