Author(s): Malala J Chirwa, Chifukushi David Chola

Abstract:

This study examines the Effectiveness of Print Media in Supporting Campaigns against Electoral Violence in Zambia focusing on the Diggers Newspaper. Guided by Agenda Setting Theory, the topic of the study was guided by three objectives: (i) to examine the effectiveness of News Diggers in reporting on electoral violence, (ii) to assess the strategies employed in campaigning against electoral violence, and (iii) to analyze the challenges faced by print media organizations in reporting anti-violence messages. A mixed-method approach; quantitative and qualitative methods was adopted, involving structured questionnaires and interviews with News Diggers employees (editors, journalists, content creators and managers); representative of three civil society organizations, two church groups, and regular readers of the newspaper all coming a sample size of 45. The study used State and Excel to compute and analyze frequencies and percentages of quantitative data, while interviews were thematically analyzed. Findings revealed that most of respondents considered print media such as News Diggers to be effective in reporting on electoral violence, with some rating the News Diggers Newspaper as being very effective. Key strategies included investigative journalism, civil society partnerships and social media amplification. Identified major challenges included political interference, resource constraints, limited access to information, and safety risks. The study concludes that News Diggers plays a vital role in shaping discourse, fostering dialogue, and holding political actors accountable, though its effectiveness is constrained by structural and political barriers. These findings imply that enhancing media independence, improving journalist safety, and strengthening partnerships with civil society are critical for maximizing the role of print media in promoting peace and democratic consolidation in Zambia. It is recommended that the newspaper strengthens editorial independence, invests in investigative and conflict-sensitive reporting, expands rural coverage, builds stronger partnerships, and enhances journalist safety to sustain its peacebuilding impact.
