Abstract:
Depression is a common and debilitating mental health condition that greatly adds to the global disease burden. It affects about 5% of adults around the world and is one of the main causes of disability, lower quality of life, and early death. Despite its widespread impact, depression remains underdiagnosed and inadequately treated worldwide. This review synthesizes evidence from recent peer-reviewed studies, global mental health reports, and epidemiological data to provide a comprehensive analysis. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the psychological, biological, environmental, and socioeconomic factors that contribute to depression, as well as its significant impact on mental health. The paper stresses that depression harms emotional health, cognitive function, and social relationships, and it often occurs alongside other mental disorders, such as anxiety and substance abuse. The rising rates of depression, worsened by globalization, technological progress, and the COVID-19 pandemic, underscore the imperative for improved mental health systems. Evidence shows that elements such as poverty, unemployment, and adverse familial conditions significantly increase vulnerability to depressive disorders, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The review also talks about important ways to treat yourself, like self-care, lifestyle changes, therapy, and medication. Getting a diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible is important to lower the risk of suicide, avoid long-term disability, and improve your overall mental health. We need more than just medical care to help people with depression. We also need policies that focus on social issues and make mental health care more accessible around the world.
