Author(s): Ajala Adeladun Stephen
Abstract:
This review examines the impact of climate change and how to achieve healthy and sustainable environment in Nigeria, the most populous African nation. The report shows from the literature that anthropogenic activities are responsible for the current climatic variations which is pushing the country to deforestation, flooding, extreme weather patterns.
The report clearly identifies two primary source of factors that contributed to climate change in Nigeria, they are farming activity and oil exploration. The result of climate change is being felt in terms of food shortage supply in the country especially from January to June every year. Grains production has reduced which is a major supply of zinc and iron to the body in the country. Also, in the Niger-Delta region where oil is, sickness such as asthma, respiratory disease and child mortality is rampant due to outcome of gas flaring into the atmosphere.
Although, Nigeria is signatory with the rest of the world to many treaties to fight climate change, but the action of the government is weak towards implementing the laws to preserve the environment effectively.
In conclusion, there are many environmental activities causing climate changes in Nigeria and this must either be reduced or overcame for the environment to be sustainable and healthy. If the government of Nigeria can be firmed, and execute existed laws and treaty that will preserve the environment.
