Abstract:

The objective of the study was to achieve the artificial reproduction of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) and evaluate the effect of different local ingredients on the growth performance and survival of the larvae in the tanks. A total of 40 Clarias gariepinus larvae were subjected to experimental diets for growth performance evaluation. The larvae were randomly distributed among the four plastic containers with an average of 10 larvae per container. After the resorption of the yolk, the larvae were fed a quantity of zooplankton, and then by the experimental diets, in two meals a day (8:30 AM and 4:30 PM). The experience lasted 15 days. After analyzing the data, the following results were obtained: (1) The physicochemical parameters of the water in the experimental tanks positively influenced the operation of artificial reproduction; (2) The female parent responded positively to the injection of the hormonal solution, the total number of eggs was estimated at 56,000, and the number of larvae was 1,960 individuals. The hatching rate was estimated at 37.5%. (3) In terms of larval growth after hatching, the highest growth was recorded in the larvae fed with the (TP) diet and the lowest growth in those that received the experimental (TC) diet; the post-hatching results show better growth performance in the larvae fed with the (TP) diet compared to the larvae fed with the (TC) diet. The high values of daily gain were recorded in the larvae subjected to the (TP) diet, while lower values were noted in the larvae subjected to the (TC) diet. The conclusion is that it is possible to artificially produce larvae in tanks and feed them for several days to evaluate growth performance and survival.
