Abstract:

Teledentistry, the convergence of telecommunications and dentistry, represents a transformative approach to oral healthcare delivery. This comprehensive analysis explores the multifaceted applications, benefits, challenges, and future prospects of teledentistry. Originating in the 1990s, teledentistry has evolved alongside advancements in technology, facilitating remote, consultations, diagnostic imaging, monitoring, and education. Real-time consultation and the store-and-forward method enable remote interaction between dental professionals and patients, overcoming geographical barriers. Teledentistry enhances access to care, particularly in underserved communities, and has demonstrated cost-effectiveness and efficacy, especially during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Patient satisfaction studies underscore the convenience and effectiveness of teledentistry, while considerations of ethics, legality, and integration into traditional practice are essential. Additionally, teledentistry extends beyond general dentistry, benefiting various specialties, including oral medicine and surgery. Despite its benefits, challenges such as the digital divide and regulatory barriers persist. However, the benefits of teledentistry in improving access, outcomes, and cost-effectiveness underscore its potential to revolutionize oral healthcare delivery.
