Abstract:

The philosophical inquiry into public health demands a balance between autonomy and responsibility. Within this frame, the microbiological safety of hawked zobo drinks in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, was evaluated using standard microbiological techniques. A total of fifty (50) samples of PET-packaged zobo drinks were bought at random from five different markets in Owerri in Southeastern Nigeria, and transported in ice bags to the Laboratory for analysis. The hawked zobo drinks before culturing were prepared and made ready for microbiological analysis. The total heterotrophic and fungal counts were on the increase, fluctuating within thresholds and sometimes above the recommended. A total of six (6) bacterial and four (4) fungal isolates were isolated. While the findings affirm the drink’s widespread consumption based on accessibility and cultural relevance, they raise ethical questions on hygiene, regulation, and community well-being. Ultimately, the study advocates for improved public awareness to improve food safety practices so as to forestall imminent health-related issues, better hygiene practices, and regulatory oversight as expressions of collective moral duty. The recommendation of preservatives could improve the shelf life of zobo drinks in the case of commercial production.
