Abstract:
Multilingualism and multiculturalism are essential components of Nigeria’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape. As a country with over 500 languages and multiple ethnic groups, promoting linguistic diversity through education is crucial for national integration, global competitiveness, and cultural preservation. This position paper explores the role of language teacher education in fostering multilingualism and multiculturalism in Nigerian schools. It argues that a well-structured language teacher education programme enhances teachers’ ability to implement inclusive pedagogical strategies, integrate indigenous and foreign languages, and create culturally responsive classrooms. The paper examines key challenges in language teacher education, including outdated curricula, inadequate professional development opportunities, and policy inconsistencies. It also highlights best practices from multilingual societies and international frameworks such as UNESCO’s guidelines on language education. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the need for teacher training programmes to incorporate sociolinguistic awareness, intercultural competence, and innovative language teaching methodologies. The study concludes by advocating for policy reforms, investment in teacher education, and curriculum enhancement to equip educators with skills needed to promote linguistic and cultural inclusivity in Nigerian schools. By strengthening language teacher education, Nigeria can harness its rich linguistic diversity for social cohesion, academic excellence, and global engagement.
