Solid Waste Generation and Management System in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State

Abstract:

This paper focuses on the Solid Waste Generation and Management Systems in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The objectives for this study includes; to determine the socio-economic characteristics (e.g. household size, income status, educational status) of respondents in the study area; to determine the frequency and volume of waste generated at a period in time (daily, weekly) by the respondents in the study area; to identify the sources of solid waste generated in the study area; examine the various methods of disposing waste in the study area, examine the problems affecting effective waste disposal in the study area. The data required and used for the study were primary and secondary data. The instrument used in acquiring these data include field observations, personal interview and questionnaire administration. Tables and charts were used to present data, while chi-square statistical technique was used to analyze domestic waste generated in the study area and also the result reveals the reasons for the indiscriminate waste dumping in the study area which includes the lack of management systems and the poor attention paid by the government in managing the waste.
