Transformations of Family Cultural Values in the Context of Globalization in Suburban Districts in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Family is a special social organization. Family is not only a cultural phenomenon but also cultural value that penetrates deeply into the emotional thoughts and life ideals of family members. The cultural value system inherent to the family serves as the foundational underpinning of familial cohesiveness, fostering sustainability, security, and contentment within family life, contributing to an increasingly better society.

In the contemporary landscape of globalization, various domains are undergoing rapid transformations, encompassing fundamental shifts in the foundational values of the family. At the same time, new values are emerging in the development process. There are many transformations in cultural values in the family such as transformations in family structure, size, and type; family functions; marital relations, spousal relations, customs, and traditions...

Approaching cultural change theory and functional theory, this article centers on the analysis of shifting family cultural values by examining fundamental family functions within the suburban districts of Ho Chi Minh City under the impact of urbanization and globalization which leads to conflicts between generations, between tradition and modernity, and rural and urban distinctions. Employing a comprehensive research approach, the study integrates both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Field investigations are conducted across five districts in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, utilizing survey questionnaires and purposeful in-depth interviews as principal research instruments.
