Attitude of Pregnant Women in Ikere-Ekiti as a Correlate to Diabetes-Related Pregnancy Complications

Abstract:
This study investigated Attitude of Pregnant Women in Ikere-Ekiti as a Correlate to Diabetes-Related Pregnancy Complications. Despite efforts by government, educational institutions and NGOs to reduce prevalence of diabetes mellitus and its associated risks. It was observed that pregnant women in Ikere-Ekiti local government area of Ekiti State exhibited lifestyle pattern that may expose them to the risks of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), hence the need for the study. The sample size for the study was 300 pregnant women. Purposive and non-stratified sampling techniques were used for the study. A self-designed questionnaire was used as research instrument. The face and content validity were ensured. Reliability was also ascertained through the use of the split half method and a coefficient of 0.98 was gotten. Inferential statistics of Chi-square (x2) was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Version 20.0 of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to analyze the data. The study concluded that pregnant women in Ikere-Ekiti local government area of Ekiti State experience pregnancy complications as a result of their negative attitude toward GDM. It was recommended that they should be encourage to register early for anti-natal care services and they should be well educated on GD.
