Abstract:

Routine medical check-ups play a pivotal role in preventive healthcare, aiding in the early detection of illnesses and contributing to overall well-being. In the academic setting, where the demands of work and a sedentary lifestyle prevail, understanding the factors influencing the practice of routine medical check-ups among academic staff becomes crucial. This study aimed to determine the factors influencing practice of routine medical check-up among academic staff of Federal University of Technology Owerri Imo State, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was distributed, capturing socio-demographics, work-related factors, attitudes, cultural influences, and medical check-up practices. Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests, were conducted, revealing significant associations and providing p-values. Findings showed that 44.31% of the academic staff of FUTO affirmed routine check-ups, with significant associations found between age (p = 0.0385), marital status (p = 0.0086), education (p = 0.0210), and income (p = 0.00112). Work-related factors like working hours (p = 0.031), workload (p = 0.007), and workplace policies (p = 0.002) exhibited significant associations. Positive attitudes (p = 0.00173) and cultural beliefs, such as faith in God (p = 0.004), also influenced practices. The study also revealed relationships between factors like age (p = 0.003), chronic diseases (p = 0.0021), and routine check-up practices. Hence, targeted interventions addressing age-specific concerns, financial barriers, and cultural influences are essential. Workplace policies, health education, and collaboration with healthcare providers can foster a health-conscious culture among academic staff.
