The Acceptance and Willingness to Uptake COVID-19 Vaccine Amongst Health Workers and Adult Population of Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria

Abstract:

The study examined the acceptance and willingness to uptake COVID-19 vaccine amongst Health workers and adult population of Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The specific objective for the study was to determine the rate of acceptance and willingness to uptake COVID-19 vaccine amongst Health workers and adult in Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of this study was 261,009 adults including Health workers aged 18 years and above, were the sample size for the study was gotten to be 399 adults in Andoni LGA, multi-stage sampling technique was used in the study. Data collected were analyzed using frequency and Chi-Square, achieved using Statistical Product and service solution (SPSS) version 23. The finding revealed that, there is a significant (P<0.05) influence of all the socio-demographic characteristics on the acceptance and willingness to uptake COVID-19 vaccine in the LGA, as regards gender, 173(44%) females were willing to take the vaccine whereas the male counterparts indicated only 28(7%) willingness with 79(20%) level of acceptance, 33-37 years age bracket shows the highest level of both acceptance 32(8%) and willingness 43(11%) to uptake COVID-19 vaccine whereas age between 18-22years indicated the highest level of unwillingness for uptake etc. The study concluded and recommended that, generally the magnitude of acceptance and consequently the uptake of COVID-19 vaccine is unexpectedly low; there is need to build public trust through the provision of reliable and consistent information about the vaccine.
