The Epidemiology of Traumatic Humeral Shaft Fractures in Chittagong

Abstract:
Objective
To assess the epidemiology of traumatic humeral shaft fracture in chittagong.
Methodology
This observational study was carried out at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, Chattogram from August 2019 to July 2021. All adult patients of closed diaphyseal fracture of humerus attending the Orthopaedics department, Chittagong Medical college Hospital during study period were the study population. Purposive sampling was done according to availability of the patients. All the data were compiled and sorted properly and the quantitative data was analyzed statistically by using Statistical Package for Social Science.
Result
Average mean ± SD age was 40.22 ± 12.451 years and the ranges were 19-65 years where maximum belonged to 31-40 years of age (32%). Out of 50 patients, 30 (60%) were male and 20 (40%) were female. Among 50 respondents, service holder and housewife both was 13 (26%) each. According to mechanism of injury, maximum patients (74%) had history of motor vehicle accident. According to AO/ OTA type of fracture, 36% patients had 12A3 and 30% had 12A1 type of fracture. According to location of fracture within shaft, maximum patients (76%) had fracture at middle 1/3rd of shaft.
Conclusion
Maximum patients had fracture at middle 1/3rd of shaft and had 12A3 type of fracture. Motor vehicle accident is the common cause for humeral shaft fracture in chittagong.
