Abstract:
The present article aims at examining critically racial segregation and its after-effects as seen through Alan Paton’s Cry the Beloved Country. In this novel, the author depicts the Apartheid system which has prevailed in South Africa for a long time and which is based on the racial segregation that the white minority exerted on the black majority of the country. It has had a lot of consequences not only on the black South Africans, but also on South Africa as a country. Hence the necessity to examine it critically trough a study of the selected novel so as to determine its ins and outs. The methodological approach used is the qualitative approach based on documentary research which includes Internet sources such as E-books and academic articles, and library sources such as books and doctoral dissertations. The Marxist critical approach which focuses on class struggle is the literary theory applied to this study. The study has found that racial segregation has destabilised the South African black people and indirectly the whole country, South Africa, at a given period of its history. The research work concludes that racial segregation is a very bad practice which needs to be eradicated wherever it still exists in the world.
