Abstract:

This study investigates the prevalence trends of hidradenitis suppurativa across sex, race, and age groups in the United States from 2014 to 2023 using data from the TriNetX Research Network. A retrospective, population-based approach was employed to analyze de-identified electronic health records encompassing over a decade of data. Results revealed a significant rise in prevalence, nearly quadrupling from 0.222% in 2014 to 0.842% in 2023, with females consistently exhibiting higher rates than males, widening from a 0.203% gap in 2014 to 0.736% in 2023. Racial disparities were striking, with African Americans experiencing the highest prevalence (2.109% in 2023) compared to Caucasians (0.691%) and Asians (0.334%). Age-specific patterns showed the greatest burden in the 15–29 age group (1.7% in 2023) and substantial increases in adolescents and middle-aged adults, while older populations (≥70 years) exhibited minimal changes. These findings highlight significant disparities across demographic subgroups, underscoring the need for targeted public health interventions, equitable healthcare policies, and further research into underlying drivers.
