The Influence of AI on Translation: A Transformative Change in the Language Industry

This research examines the tendency of changes of translation in connection with the development of artificial intelligence (AI). The study took place at an industrial university in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where one hundred students (n=100) from the second-year translation class were interviewed regarding AI as a tool for their translation processes and the quality of products they work on at the end. While prior researchers have highlighted the scope of actions achieved through the use of AI translation instruments and assisted translators, however, very little has been understood in regards the thoughts of future translators as to the application of such technology in their profession. For this purpose, a mixed-methods approach has been chosen to address this gap. Surveys and observations were used in this research and appropriate analytical procedures were developed. The results will highlight students’ expectations of the influence of AI on their translation activities as well as the accuracy level of the final work. This leads to the last point of this dissertation where possible synergies between AI and human translators are also addressed as a strategy to get the best outcomes. This paper could be advantageous as it offers a new professional perspective to educators and practitioners overall as these trends will in the future increase integration of AI into the work of human translators.
