Abstract:
Medicinal plants are integral to traditional medicinal practices globally, renowned for their widespread availability and minimal side effects. Melia azedarach L., commonly known as chinaberry or Persian lilac, has long been esteemed in traditional medicine systems for its diverse therapeutic properties. This review comprehensively explores the pharmacological activities, phytochemical constituents, and traditional applications of Melia azedarach L., shedding light on its potential as a valuable medicinal resource. Pharmacological investigations have unveiled a myriad of bioactivities attributed to various parts of the plant, including leaves, bark, seeds, and roots. These encompass antidiabetic, anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antihyperlipidemic, and hepatoprotective effects, among others. Phytochemical analyses have identified a plethora of secondary metabolites, such as limonoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds, contributing to its pharmacological efficacy. Furthermore, this review delves into the traditional uses of Melia azedarach L. across different cultures, highlighting its historical significance in treating ailments ranging from gastrointestinal disorders to skin diseases. The integration of traditional knowledge with modern scientific evidence underscores the potential of Melia azedarach L. as a promising candidate for drug discovery and development. However, further research is warranted to elucidate its mechanisms of action, optimize dosage regimens, and assess safety profiles for clinical applications. This comprehensive synthesis aims to inspire further exploration and utilization of Melia azedarach L. in contemporary healthcare practices, while fostering interdisciplinary collaborations between traditional healers and modern scientists.
