Abstract:

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of pictionary drills in vocabulary building for Filipino as a second language. Specifically, it aimed to investigate 1) the students’ level of performance before and after the intervention, 2) whether or not there is a significant difference in the students’ performance before and after intervention, 4) highlights and lowlights in the implementation of pictionary drills. Quantitative data were gathered through a one group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design, and qualitative data were gathered through focused group discussion from 30 students in Filipino Learning Support Program through convenient sampling, and teachers’ anecdotal records. The Paired T-test results revealed that pictionary drills have increased students’ vocabulary from (M=32.8) Did Not Meet Expectations to (M=47.2) Very Satisfactory level with a significant pair difference and mean gain (t-value ay 9.494, p-value <0.001). Pictionary drills highlights include fostering creativity, improving communication skills, building vocabulary, and providing instructional opportunities, while lowlights include issues with time allocation, fun over focus, and competition resulting to peer pressure. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the utilization of the pictionary drills is effective in building vocabulary in Filipino as a second language of LSP students.
