Grease Analysis as a Predictive Maintenance Concept for Offshore Crude Export Mechanical Assets

Abstract:

Offshore crude export systems depend on a small population of grease lubricated mechanical assets whose failure carries disproportionate commercial and environmental consequences. Single point mooring (SPM) buoy main bearings, floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) turret and swivel assemblies, marine loading arm slewing rings, export pump and driver bearings, hose reel and winch drives, and pedestal crane slew bearings are all grease lubricated, difficult to access, and in several cases impossible to replace without extended export shutdown. Conventional condition monitoring on these assets is constrained: Vibration signatures from slow rotating, intermittently loaded bearings are weak, and oil analysis does not apply because there is no circulating oil to sample. This paper develops the case, as it stood in 2023, for in-service grease analysis as the primary predictive maintenance technology for this asset class. It reviews the failure behavior of grease lubricated offshore export equipment, the maturation of grease sampling and testing standards (notably ASTM D7718 for sampling and ASTM D7918 for die extrusion testing of small in-service samples), the diagnostic parameters that correlate with incipient bearing and gear distress, and a practical implementation framework covering sampling design, laboratory selection, limit setting, competence, digital architecture, data governance, cybersecurity, spares strategy, assurance, and economics. Drawing on a wide body of adjacent research in condition monitoring, integrity management, remote inspection, energy autonomous sensing, industrial safety analytics, supply chain readiness, and asset lifecycle data governance, the paper argues that grease analysis converts the largest blind spot in offshore export asset condition monitoring into a measurable, trendable data stream at low cost and with minimal intrusion, and it identifies the organizational, digital, and technical prerequisites for a successful program.
