Author(s): Elizabeth Ukor, Agbogun I Matthew

Abstract:

It is evident through research that there are challenges that hinder the ideal process of teaching and learning translation, especially with regard to the use of electronic tools in teaching translation to Master's students. Thus, the aim of this research is to determine whether electronic translation tools are one of the tools used in teaching translation to Master's students. It also identifies and examines the e-tools like the computer, internet, software like the SDL trados, Systran, Word Fast et al, used in teaching translation to students. The methodology of this quantitative and qualitative study adopts a descriptive approach. The study sample comprises three universities in Nigeria that have translation program at the Masters level. In order to collect data, questionnaires are designed and administered to translation lecturers and master degree students in the three selected universities. The data collected is analysed by simple percentage. The results obtained reveals: that most of the master’s courses do not include a course focusing on electronic tools for translation in Nigerian universities; showing theconsiderable shortcomings in the use of electronic tools in teaching translation to students. According to the results, majority agreed that practical sessions should be encouraged to improve the understanding of electronic tools especially in the program. Among thecontributions to knowledge, the study demonstrates the imperative need for the integration and practice of the technological aspect of translation in the teaching and learning process of translation in universities.
