Author(s): Chinenye Hope Awurum, Festus C Njosi

Abstract:

The radical development of technology and the advent of the internet in recent decades had its impact on translation and international communication. Thus, the advancement of technology in today’s world has brought to fore the need for more efficient methods of translation; this has made it necessary to integrate machine technologies in the translation process. Though, translation technology is meant to make translators’ workload lighter, more efficient, faster and bring about many benefits, the complexity of its nature still requires the human touch. No doubt, machines have not yet been able to so solve entirely the challenges associated with the translation of text. Therefore, this study is aimed, at evaluating the contributions as well as the limitations of the use of technology in the translation of text. Furthermore, this study adopts the Computational linguistics (CL) theory as its theoretical framework. Computational linguistics theory deals with language analysis with the aid of computers. The main application areas of Computational linguistics are machine translation, speech recognition, speech synthesis and man-machine interfaces. The study also made use of the quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection; the research uses the simple percentage and the focus group discussion (FGD) which selected French students from universities in Ebonyi state as well as translation teachers and professionals to analyse and validate its results and findings. The study revealed that, though technology has great impact on efficiency and effectiveness, but it has not been able to solve entirely the problems and difficulties associated with text translation. Recommendations among others focuses on the need for the development of technological skills by Nigeria professional translators and also encouraged investors to invest in the training and development of professional translators in the use of machine translation, electronic translation tools (ETT), CAT tools and other technological translation software and internet sites. This is because the Nigeria translation industry has the capacity to boost the economy and make it a viable means of revenue which will attract foreign direct investment (FDI).
